Legal Status of Chimps Heading to Higher Court

A New York intermediate court has denied the Nonhuman Rights Project's petition for writ of habeas corpus, in which it sought the release of two chimpanzees.  The Project had sought to establish that the chimps were legal persons and entitled to immediate release.  The Project intends to take its case to New York's highest court, the Court of Appeals.  The intermediate court denied the Project's petition, concluding that there was no precedent in New York law for treating a chimp as a person.
