Menagerie Rescued from Derelict Sailboat

July 21, 2016

FWC officials rescued numerous pets from a derelict sailboat moored in Marathon Key's Boot Key Harbor.  Police officials boarded the vessel to take Susanne Kynast into protective custody pursuant the Baker Act.  Police also arrested Kynast's husband, Raymond Geisel, on unrelated charges for stalking and threatening law enforcement.

Living onboard with Kynast and Geiser were four cats, nine iguanas, and five turtles.  All of the animals were seized and removed from the "deplorable conditions."  FWC officials reported "excessive layers of feces surrounding the exterior deck of the vessel, thigh-to-waist-high levels of untreated garbage, feces and vomit-stained couch cushions ... an infestation of flies and maggots."  The couple now faces 73 misdemeanor charges including animal cruelty and captive-wildlife offenses.
