Jamie Katz is a licensed private investigator in Fort Lauderdale whose practice focuses on finding missing pets. Along with her degree in criminal justice, Katz uses a pair of scent-sniffing canines—a Brittany spaniel named Gable and a terrier named Fletcher—to solve problems for pet owners that are typically not high priorities for police. Katz trained as an apprentice with Lost Pet Professionals, a Nebraska-based organization that finds missing pets. Since she opened her own business in September 2015, she's taken 88 cases and has been successful in 53 of them. Katz's methodology includes shoe-leather canvassing and social media investigating and she remains up-to-date on the latest pet-napping scams. "I'll offer any service that I think will bring back your pet," Katz promises. "I'll hold your hand the entire way." For this service, Katz charges $95 an hour and tracking with her dogs can cost as much as $500, but in many cases she lowers prices or even works for free. She hopes to eventually hire more staff and move into a larger home with more space for her animals and her business.
