Javier Orelly, was arrested for the sacrifice of his dog and a duck. Neighbors claim that Orelly set up a sacrificial shrine in the front yard of his apartment complex, threw his dog around, and then beheaded his dog and a duck. When deputies arrived, they found a small medieval-style ax and a stick with the word "torture" in Spanish next to a grave, the beheaded bodies of the animals, and the animal heads sitting on two rocks. Initially, Orelly told deputies that he killed his dog because it bit him, but then later claimed that he needed to cleanse himself through animal sacrifice because he was stressed. Florida's "Humane Slaughter Act" permits the religious ritual sacrifice of certain animals in Florida, however the slaughter of dogs or cats is prohibited. Orelly faces two counts of animal cruelty and is currently being held without bail.
